Ignite Your Succession Planning with These Essential Questions

If you’re like many money management professionals, you know how easy it is to get caught up in the day-to-day business — and put off long-term strategizing around your exit plan.

A well-thought-out plan — supported with consistent action — is the difference between good intentions (or worse, wishful thinking) and actually transitioning successfully into an inspiring next chapter.

So, what do you need to know to kickstart your succession planning today?

Clarity around your goals is the key to success

Developing clarity about your own transition and retirement goals is the key to a successful exit strategy.

One of my favorite quotes from Seneca illustrates this idea nicely:

Our plans miscarry because they have no aim. When a man does not know what harbor he is making for, no wind is the right wind.”

ripple effects and gaining clarity around your personal goals

Imagine the ripple effects in all areas of your life by just starting with yourself and what matters most to you NOW! Gaining clarity around your personal goals and your long-held aspirations for your business is an amazing gift you can give yourself, your family, your team and your clients.

Creating this “win-win-win” for you and your stakeholders can seem so simple; but it isn’t easy.  If it was, more business owners would have succession plans in place!

And yet, this is the worthiest of goals.

When you invest your precious time, energy and resources into this, not only will this help you envision your legacy, you’ll feel personally ignited to work with renewed energy and purpose.  I think of this as a leadershift.  A shift from business as usual to truly leading your team and future proofing your business.

Three questions to ask yourself now

The Number One mistake that money management professionals make is that they don’t prioritize time to focus on their vision for succession planning and legacy.  As a result, they are not taking consistent action in support of the critical steps essential for setting themselves and their stakeholders up for achieving a “triple win” outcome.

A vision without consistent action is nothing but wishful thinking!

You can get this ball rolling by asking yourself the following 3 questions:

  1. What can I do right now to create mental space and time to focus on what really matters most to me relative to the legacy of my business and my hopes for my own life?

  1. What am I prioritizing over my strategic and life planning?

  1. What do I want for my loved ones, clients, and team? What is the potential ripple effect on them of my plans — or lack thereof?

Take some time to reflect deeply on these questions and identify some simple actions to take now. This might include making strategic calls, research, or sketching out what your exit might look like.

Get clear with yourself about the gap between where you are today and the essential actions you can take between now and year end to create some momentum toward achieving your goals.  With this clarity on what “harbor’’ you seek, you can lead the way forward with greater confidence.

Let’s connect to find out if you’re ready for a personalized action plan so that you too have a clear path forward: a success plan for today and a succession plan for tomorrow.
